Section 1: Review (Approx. 150 words)
Throughout this course I have been provided with a high standard of teaching which has led to improving and developing my skills, helping me choose a specific area in which I feel I can express my strongest abilities and even further a career in. From studying Art and Design for almost two years I feel I specialise specifically in ‘textiles’ because not only do I produce satisfactory levels of work in this subject area I thoroughly enjoy the process of creating practical or decretive fabrics and objects. Moreover I have progressed in other areas which I find challenging for example fine art. I have improved my drawing skills and worked with a variety of medias that I would not usually choose to work with such as pencil, coloured pencil, watercolour, acrylic paint, emulsion, ink, fine liner, wax and puff binder, which I can now incorporate into future projects including my current final major project. Other medias and techniques that I have explored when working with textiles consist of knitting, weaving, felting, needle felting, devore, batik, dyeing, appliqué, screen printing and embroidery some of which I have greatly advanced in and some that I will take forward into my final major project. The pathway which I am taking forward for this project is ‘textiles’ because I feel that I am able to plan, research, analyse and develop ideas to produce work and a final piece at an excellent standard. Also I feel this is where my strongest abilities lay and I am able to produce a strong project using a range of methods and techniques that I have discovered and developed throughout this Art and Design course.
Section 2: Project Concept (Approx. 250 words)
For my final major project I have chosen the title ‘Pattern’. I feel this is a strong and flexible theme as there is so much that can be connected to pattern and I can really explore and expand my research. I am aiming to achieve the highest grade for this project therefore I will produce work at the highest of standards. Through research I will gain knowledge in all aspects of my chosen theme ranging from how pattern links with animals to looking at how countries and cultures use pattern on interior objects and fabric. My final major project will consist of an A4 research file, a sketchbook, mood boards (including drawn research), artist research sheets, critical studies, design development sheets, experimental sampling, final design sheets, a costing sheet, a technical file, blog posts, time management sheets and an evaluation. The artists which I will look at will mostly be textile designers and furniture designers such as; Suzan Drummen, Jane Crowther, William Morris, Orla Kiely and Lisa Corti. However I hope to find an artist who works with cultural prints and patterns. My initial idea will begin with a mind map of my overall Ideas, through methods of research I will narrow my ideas down to a specific area of pattern, I feel I will look at Moroccan patterns taken from my primary and secondary research for example; my room as it is Moroccan themed and mainly the book ‘20th Century Pattern Design Textile & Wallpaper Pioneers’. Moreover I will focus on an animal which links nicely with Moroccan for example an elephant. I will merge them together into a design and develop it to create my own unique pattern. The pattern will repeat and contain a variety of colours. I will use my final pattern design to create a screen print which I will then use to create experimental samples on different fabrics such as; pillow cotton, silk, felt, lining paper e.t.c. From this my aim is to produce a final piece using my own unique patterned print onto an interior surface whether that being my own wall covering or bedding set. I plan to finish this project with an in-depth evaluation.
Section 3: Evaluation (Approx. 100 words)
From posting on my blog and annotating my work daily I will evaluate my progress through this project. My blog allows me to show what research and experimentation I take forward, the problem solving I encounter, the development of my work, my chosen artists and how they influence my progression, what techniques and medias I use and continual explanations on what went well, what could be improved and my strengths and weaknesses. My time management sheets allow me to see what stage I am currently working at and what I have left to do helping me keep more organised throughout this project. At the end of my final major project I will assess all of the work I have produced including my bibliography, a costing sheet, critical analysis, peer assessments, annotations, time management sheet and my blog to do an overall evaluation.
